A pervasive and unnatural silence fills the space of this chamber. Vaulted ceilings loom overhead, adorned with faded frescoes of cowled figures whispering to one another. Old prayer mats line the stone hall; a skeleton adorned in aged, dusty linens lies on the floor near each mat. At the northern end of the sanctum is an altar, behind which stands a large ornate statue of a hooded man with a finger pressed to his lips.
This hall of prayer and worship was trapped by Lyria to slay the monastics after she finished using their labor to build her initial traps.
Unnatural Silence: The chamber is veiled in perfect silence as the result of divine imposition. Attempts to cancel this effect through arcane methods such as dispel magic will fail.
Prayer Mats: Each prayer mat is pierced by a 1” hole, a detail serving as a clue to the trap that killed the monastics who were praying here when they died. A character who searches the stonework underneath the mats and succeeds a DC 13 find trap check finds concealed holes housing spears. The skeletons of the deceased lie nearby in their tattered robes.
Statue of Amun Tor: A character searching the statue and succeeding a DC 12 Intelligence check identifies the hand of the statue is a lever. Moving the lever to the right appears to do nothing, but it releases an odorless gas, filling the chamber over the course of the next 10 minutes (the sound of the gas jets cannot be heard because of the silence spell). Characters who spend the full 10 minutes within this area must succeed a DC 11 Fortitude save or become paralyzed for 1 hour. After 15 minutes, spears shoot up from underneath where the prayer mats are placed. When the trap is triggered, each spear makes a melee weapon attack, dealing damage against any target standing on a trapped mat.
If the statue’s hand is moved to the left, a secret door slides open at the northern end of the room leading back to the labyrinth.
Altar: Upon the northern altar is a bronze bowl, incense, and small strips of parchment paper. A character who searches the altar finds an inscription, which reads “Only an offering to Amun Tor allows you keep what you bequeath.” If a character pens a secret or a piece of knowledge few know about on the parchment and burns it in the bowl with the incense, a golden ring materializes on the statue of Amun Tor’s hand and drops to the floor.
The ring contains the soul of the Sister Abbess, the head monastic of Amun Tor’s faith. She will telepathically share with the character who wears the ring the tale of the order’s downfall, the theft and return of the Reliquary of Silent Sisters, and the betrayal they endured by trusting the thief Lyria. The Sister Abbess directs the character to obtain the Reliquary of Silent Sisters so it can be taken from the hands of a heathen and restored. The Sister Abbess mistakenly believes the holy artifact is still located in area 1-14.
While wearing the ring, a character gains a bonus to Willpower saving throws.
