In the City, light is a constant concern; in the Underworld, it is literally a matter of light and death. Lampwright’s Street caters to these concerns. Chandlers, tallow-mongers, lamplighters, oil producers, candlestick makers, pyromancers, and linkboys are all piled on top of each other: the narrow streets are crowded with hawkers giving elaborate demonstrations in light-craft.
Lampwright’s Street is one of the few districts fully illuminated at night. As such, it is considered “good sport” by many thieves guilds. (This has sparked a rivalry between the chandlers and the thieves; the rivalry is more or less friendly.)
Sensations:
The stink of rendering whale fat. The smell of sulfur byproduct. Storefronts lit by a thousand lights; lamps, candles, votives, torches, candelabras, menorahs, lanterns; fueled by tallow, butter, fish-oil, olive-oil; casings made of stained glass, iron, white gold, painted wood, bronze.
Rumor:
Certain ingenious lampwrights are incorporating Underworld materials into their new designs. Several enterprising entomologists are attempting to breed a strain of Underworld inframoths that can survive on the surface. Other lampwrights are trying to lure will o’ wisps into lamps filled with corpse fat. These lampwrights will pay good coin for novel sources of illumination discovered in the Underworld.
Special City Action:
- Purchase fireworks: You can purchase fireworks for 25g per rocket by using this City Action. They can be set off during a Challenge to great effect—Blinding lights or Piercing Wounds, depending on how close the explosion occurred.
- Fireworks are fickle. There is a 25% chance that fireworks will misfire in some way: rocketing backwards, exploding prematurely, or fizzling out.
