The Brothel of Battle

The Swordwhores are a free mercenary company who are one of the most powerful—and wealthiest—independent powers in the City. Members pay dues to the Swordwhores and, in return, are outfitted with the best ironwork that collective bargaining can buy. In theory, when called, the Swordwhores are expected to go to war—a ready army for whatever noble house buys them. In practice, the Swordwhores make enough gold through their independent conquests that they are able to refuse any contract.

The Swordswhores station themselves in the Brothel of Battle, a small district catering to the unwholesome appetites of the violent. The cobblestone streets are crammed with taverns with tough and queer sounding names (“SWORD GRINDER!” “The Bridle and Harness”).

Sensations:

The streets are narrow and the buildings lean against each other. Prostitutes call out prices and preferences down from balconies. Two get into a disagreement, and one hops the small distance between their balconies to start a brawl. A crowd of appreciative Swordwhores gathers. A ribald tune is sung in a nearby tavern. The streets smell like old piss and ale.

• Join the Swordwhores: For 100g in dues, you can join the Swordwhores. Thereafter, you may purchase iron and steel armor with an impoverished upkeep during the City Phase (p. 163).
