The Hellmarkt
Dungeon SeedHis Majesty the Worm · p.358
Open source p.358The Hellmarkt sits at a crossroads between the Underworld and the far realms, where spirits dwell. It takes human commerce and turns it up a notch. Spirits trade intangible things: the color of your eyes, the memory of your mother, your sense of fear. In return? They give you (almost) anything you want. It is impossible to buy your heart’s desire. However, many spirits have powerful tools that would make achieving your quest much simpler. They are willing to trade these things to you for a price. The costs of the Hellmarkt seem reasonable. Too reasonable. Alas, no mortal has ever made this bargain and avoided regret.
Sights
Goblins cluster, offering you a variety of pretty, cheap things. A myriad of spirits eagerly sing structures into existence: there are a thousand details to take in at once, and the spirits insist that you pay attention to everything.
Sounds
Inhuman glossolalia babbles from all sides; two spirits argue about minute differences in their contrasting epistemological eschatologies. When they glimpse you, they are excited. “Come by! Come buy!”
Smell and taste
Each stall has a different intoxicating scent prickling at the memory centers of your brain: cut grass, your mother’s perfume, the food on your wedding day.
Lighting
Well lit with fires of many colors.
Structures
A huge cavern has been co-opted into a huge outdoor market. Bedouin-like tents define the stalls. Most rooms and pathways are defined only by silks and tapestries.
