Hookfin Hideaway

Location

Mucklands Sandbox Campaign Setting · p.177

Open source p.177

Hex 39.25. The Hookfin Horde, a band of FINFOLK marauders, make their hideout in the splintered hull of a sunken ship that washed into the Quagmash from Scalawag Strand long ago. Among their ranks are skilled beastmasters that allow them to dwell in harmony with LIGHTNING EELS and a full grown CLUNCH DRAGON that nests in the ship.

lair layout

AREA 1: THE CLUNCH POOL

A moat of debris and garbage circles the mast of the ship, which juts out from the swamp like a rotten tree. Capsized skiffs sit broken on receding flood waters, overgrown with vines and bog flowers.

  • Anyone traversing the debris must beware of sharp and pointy driftwood and flotsam.
  • The water is particularly sticky and slimy, making swimming difficult.

AREA 2: THE FORECASTLE

Just below the surface of the water is a tall forecastle, covered in seaweed camouflage.

  • Hookfin GUARDS (L4-G) armed with harpoons keep watch here, mostly to slay unwanted creatures like MUCKMEN and ORCHES.
  • Just below the top level of the forecastle through a hatch is the main crew quarters, where most of the Hookfins rest (Area 3).

AREA 3: THE MAIN DECK

Splintered in half, the hole in the main deck creates an entrance into the bowels of the ship.

  • The entrance is dark and murky. A pair of trained LIGHTNING EELS (L2-B) lie in wait in the darkness ready to attack anyone who's scent they don't recognize.
  • Hookfin members come and go from the hole in the main deck as they please.
  • There's a 2-in chance that the CLUNCH DRAGON (L3-C) exits the hole to burrow and bask in the flotsam above.
  • Beneath the splintered deck lies a slanted ornate door that leads to The Captain's Quarters (Area 4).
  • Straight down 30 feet into the watery hole is the Gun Deck (Area 5).

AREA 4: THE CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS

An underwater room of luxury, with pilfered art hung on the walls.

  • A patrolling FINFOLK (L3-B) sentry mills about the lower decks of the ship, passing by the Captain's Quarters, Gun Deck, and Brig.
  • Unless the PCs have caused a ruckus, Boss Tangler (PIRATE L5-C) is sitting inside at a table, being waited on by his butler. He examines a map of Sinkhole over a pile of half-eaten fish. The Hookfins are planning to besiege the town and take it over for themselves.

AREA 5: GUN DECK

The deck is stacked with crates full of supplies, and racks filled with weapons loaded with all manner of Mundane weapons.

  • The CLUNCH DRAGON'S long, coiling body bisects the deck as the critter rests in the Cargo Hold. Sneak Check to avoid waking the creature.
  • 4 crates are full of stolen MUCKROOT (see quest The Hookfin Hoarders p167)
  • A pair of heavy rusted cannons still remain on the deck. They can't fire, but could be refurbished.
  • At the end of the deck is The Brig (Area 6).
  • Down a jagged crack in the deck is the Cargo Hold (Area 7).

AREA 6: THE BRIG

A rusty, locked 10' x 10' iron cell.

  • The key is held by a single patrolling FINFOLK (L3-B).
  • A quortle prisoner named Ooni sits behind locked bars next to the skeletal remains of two boggarts in diving suits with empty air tubes. She is an alchemist trained by Queen Moosh, on an expedition to gather Quagmash herbs for Quortlen (p208).
  • The boggarts were Puddlejumpers: Jopper Dinnem and Banglo Weltree, who had been missing for months (see quest The Missing Puddlejumpers p157). A map detailing the Lost Willows (p165) still remains in the boot of Jopper Dinnem. With it, the PCs can't get Lost there.

AREA 7: CARGO HOLD

The CLUNCH DRAGON'S nest, a mess of sunken objects and mossy sediment.

  • Visibility is extremely difficult down here especially if the CLUNCH DRAGON is present. Swirling sediment makes all Search and Perception Checks suffer Disadvantage.
  • Ooni's knapsack of herbs, along with the Puddlejumpers' belongings lie here.
  • Banglo Weltree had a strongbox that the Hookfins couldn't open. Inside is a Magic whistle called Buzztamer. Mettle Check: Once per session, the user can pacify an insectoid CREATURE or CRITTER, or take control of an insectoid CREEPER for [Level] minutes.
  • The CLUNCH DRAGON has amassed an Old Hoard () over the years.
