Mandrell Village

Hex 43.9. A riverbank village built on wooden stilts. Mandrell is home to a small community of MANDRAS— salamander folk that farm fish and RIVERGOLD.

what's going on

• Hookfin Horde PIRATES are terrorizing Mandrell, stealing their fish and kidnapping citizens for ransom.
• The River Watch demands taxes, even though they won't offer protection from the Hookfin Horde.

HOWIE SLIPPERTAIL

Frustrated with his lot in life, Howie is determined to protect Mandrell from PIRATES. But he's just a simple farmer and doesn't know the first thing about fighting.

• Traits: Earnest, angry, dreams of being a hero.
• Motivation: Drive the river PIRATES and the River Watch from Mandrell.

GARMA SHADYMANDER

A MANDRA WITCH who is something of a village matriarch. The other villagers don't always agree with her, but they respect her longevity. Some say she's over 130 years old, and wields magic both great and terrible.

• Traits: Venerable, kind to the non-ignorant, does not suffer fools.
• Motivation: Keep Mandrell traditions from dying out.

PROTECTION FOR MANDRELL

You are brought to sit before Garma Shadymander who is eager to speak with outsiders. She explains that the River Watch demands a great tax without any benefit. Worse, the dastardly Hookfin Horde attacks the village freely, and the River Watch could not care less. You are not MANDRA, but perhaps you can help convince the River Watch that Mandrell is out of its jurisdiction, or else negotiate protection against further PIRATE attacks. In return, she will give you all her Herb Components.

• The River Watch officials care little about the plight of Mandrell, except for one constable named Warley at the Watchtower (p239). Warley doesn't have much power, but if convinced, he suggests scrubbing Mandrell from the River Watch records. The PCs would need to break into Sheriff Ratchet's office.

• The Hookfin Horde kidnapped villagers from Mandrell, and no one can rescue them.
• The River Watch demands Mandrell pay taxes, even though they won't help defend against river PIRATES, leaving the villagers destitute.

HOOKFIN HEIST

Howie Slippertail doesn't trust the River Watch to make good on any promises. Besides, the kidnapped villagers need help now! Join Howie to find the Hookfin Horde's hideout, and show the PIRATES they'll regret ever messing with Mandrell. He thinks the Hookfins have a base somewhere in the Giantstep Mountains.

• The Hookfin Horde has a secret hideout located behind a waterfall at Giant Falls (p249).
• Howie isn't the most skilled warrior (+0 Attack and Defense, 10 Courage, 1d6 Dread), but if he sees his crush, Nala, his Courage doubles.
• HEROIC TITLE ACHIEVEMENT: Save the kidnapped villagers of Mandrell.
