Pitchwing's Roost
LocationMucklands Sandbox Campaign Setting · p.390
Open source p.390Hex 21.1. At the highest peak of Skroknest Mountain is the nest of the largest SKROKWING in the Mucklands— Pitchwing. According to the rumors, Pitchwing is a ravenous critter that swoops down from the sky and snatches people and animals right off the ground. She delights in shiny, sparkly things, amassing quite a hoard of items in her huge nest. All of which is true, but what no one knows is that Pitchwing is actually two birds, a pair of SKROKWING mates.
rumors
- Pitchwing hunts for days at a time, returning to her nest after catching prey.
- Some think Pitchwing might be pregnant. Which raises the question, where is her mate?
- Someone lost an old beat up flying machine within Pitchwing's Roost.
lair layout
AREA 1: THE CLIMB
A treacherous mountain path leads to a difficult climb up a sheer rock cliff, as wind howls in the frigid air.
- Climbing Checks suffer Disadvantage, and failure might stir the sleeping bird, or birds, if both are present (1-in chance).
- The wind rages so hard that loose items or clothes might fly off the side of the mountain.
AREA 2: THE ROOST
A sprawling, domed nest made of the signature regurgitated orange wax that skrokwings use to roost. Waxy, sticky leaves cover the ground of the large cavernerous space, big enough for a giant bird to comfortably ruffle its feathers.
- There is a 1-in chance that both mates are present, otherwise one is out hunting.
- All who gaze upon the Pitchwings (L9-C) make a Mettle Check to avoid fleeing from the nest in fear. Disadvantage if both birds are present.
- One or both Pitchwings are resting their huge heads curled into the crooks of their downy chests. A Sneak Check is required to move around the nest without disturbing them. Disadvantage if both birds are present.
- The roost is a trove of items scattered around the nest including:
- A broken flying machine.
- The splintered wagon of Alistair Jadley, and some of his remaining cargo (p361).
- An Ancient Hoard ().
- If one Pitchwing is present, there is a 1-in chance that the other Pitchwing returns while the PCs are there.
