The Howling Dam

Location

Mucklands Sandbox Campaign Setting · p.257

Open source p.257

Hex 42.9. A unique place where typically solitary RIVERSAURS congregate. Normally, the creatures would battle each other for supremacy and territory, but here the RIVERSAURS have worked together to create a massive dam across a wide section of the Nackadonkee river to protect their eggs. Named for the horrible screeches that emanate from the lair at night, locals despise the dam, and not just because of the fearsome creatures; it has also caused flooding and killed crops.

rumors
  • If Howling Dam isn't destroyed, there might be famine this year.
  • A FELMOG KNIGHT went to Howling Dam searching for treasure but never returned to the Stone.

AREA 1: THE WATER'S SURFACE

  • At the east end, two bull RIVERSAURS battle it out and chomp at anyone that gets in the way.
  • At the west end, a shrym diver collects RIVERSAUR eggs to sell to Captain Braag in Capstan (p198), who then sells them to River Barons as a delicacy.
  • At the south end is the dam.
  • At the north end a RIVERSAUR returns with a fresh HIPPOGRUFF kill to feed its young.

AREA 2: THE DAM

Built from timber, sticks, and mud, the dam is an impressive feat of engineering, spanning a wide section of the Nackadonkee River. It far outclasses any beaver's dam.

  • Destroying the dam would take explosives, or perhaps magic, but merely taking it apart by hand would take forever.
  • The RIVERSAURS have built in ramparts to stick their long necks through and attack anything that tampers with the dam. Anyone who walks on the dam must make a Sneak Check to avoid being attacked by a RIVERSAUR poking its head through a hole.

AREA 3: THE DEPTHS

  • RIVERSAURS pace the waters at all times while the rest are out hunting or sleeping.
  • A clutch of RIVERSAUR eggs is just about to hatch and the “mamasaur” (as the ORCHES of Quagmash would call her) is particularly protective.
  • At the bottom of the dam, 150 feet below the surface is the skeleton of a half-eaten Felmog knight gripping a giant, sword-sized key. The key opens an Ancient Hoard () in a huge buried chest deep underwater near the dam.
