Hex 17.19. A notorious bartering hub where rogues of all sorts trade with each other, safe from the law. Founded by the famed outlaw Big Shem Teegus (rest his soul), the Old Place is a fancified cavern where THIEVES hide and peddle their loot. The place overlooks Franny's Fall, a waterfall that drains into a sinkhole called Cord's Cave. Lamps hang from brass rings nailed into the cavern walls. Etched into a great square stone at the center of the hideout are Big Shem Teegus's Rules.

big shem teegus's rules
for the old place

1. Lay low or get low. No fighting or else!
2. What's yers is yers is yers. No stealing or else!
3. What's mine is mine is mine. No stealing or else!
4. If yer wantin' what's mine to be yers. Offer fair or else! Few break the rules for fear that the Big Teegus gang, mostly old timers who are still in charge, will toss the offenders over Franny's Fall to their certain demise.

URSA MARGWART

Leader of the aging Big Teegus Gang, Ursa is one of the oldest, orneriest boggarts in the Mucklands. She's got a tight grip on her gang, although there's not one of them under the age of eighty. Despite this, the denizens of the Old Place respect her well enough, and do as they're told.

  • Traits: Ornery, stern, nostalgic about the old days.
  • Motivation: Maintain traditions and honor among thieves.

TORREN THE TOADIE

A Nork's Noodle Gang upstart, Torren is the constant butt of jokes at the Old Place. He seemingly takes it in stride, but covets Ursa's position.

  • Traits: Brash, snarky, can't stop flipping a coin.
  • Motivation: Take over the Old Place.
sights and sounds

1. A rickety wooden sign with chipped paint reads: "Mind the Rules, or Else!"
2. A squinty-eyed MERCENARY picks their teeth with a long knife, never taking their eyes off of the PCs.
3. A boggart rascal yelps when an oversized mouse trap snaps his foot.
4. A shrym with blacked out goggles opens their coat to reveal gilded baubles: hair brushes, tooth brushes, mirrors, combs, and razors. All for sale.
5. Three stone-faced YOWLJACKS deal a game of Rascal Rummy, motioning for one of the PCs to join.
6. A goblin wearing weorg skins drops a bundle of hides onto a table in front of a large boggart with a monocle. "How much?" says the goblin.

The sword, however, was lost in a Drippy Down mine, and she doesn't remember where exactly.

quests

“THE HEX IF I KNOW!”

Gerrick Hexkey wants a can of Sporg. There's nothing quite like a skrok egg scrambled in Sporg. Only trouble is, Gerrick has no idea where to get a can of Sporg these days. Bring him a can and he'll grant a favor of hex magic.

  • An abandoned factory full of Sporg is in the Used T'Be Forest (p370).

THE FUGITIVE KNIGHT

Lady Korsca is wanted, true, but unjustly. She defeated Outrider Captain Nemic in a duel and won his family's heirloom, a Magnificent sword. Ashamed, Nemic claimed she stole the sword. Hounded by bounty hunters, Lady Korsca escaped an ambush, only to lose the sword in one of the mines in the Drippy Downs, but can't recall if it was Vorg'Varga Ket or Vorg'Varga Vek. If she leaves her hideout Outriders will be sure to find her, so she needs you to get the sword for her. Succeed and she'll share valuable rumors from the Felmog Outriders. Rumors that could lead to a fortune.

  • The sword fell in Vorg'Varga Ket, but has since been taken by Shog the ETTIN (p59).

NEW BLOOD

Torren the Toadie wants the Old Place for himself. The Big Teegus gang are behind the times, out of touch, and not to mention they keep denying Torren's suggestion to open up a Nork's Noodle Nook in the center of the hideout. Convince Ursa and the others to open up a Nork's Noodle Nook, or get rid of Ursa and her gang so Torren can take over. Torren offers free Nork's Noodles for life in return.

THE TREASURE OF CORD'S CAVE

Ursa Margwart and the Big Teegus Gang are in trouble. She knows it, everyone knows it. The only way she can keep the Old Place running as it was meant to is if she can get that treasure from Cord's Cave. With Cord's treasure, Ursa can fix up the Old Place and hire honest, hard working thieves to establish a true Bandit Court and uphold Big T's Rules for generations. Rumor has it Old Cord stole a heap of treasure meant as a gift from the trolls of Dunk to the faeries of Faerie Market. Cord was in the process of divvying up his loot when WYVERNS attacked and the treasure fell into Franny's Fall. Find the treasure for Ursa and get a finder's fee: first pick of the loot.

  • Cord's Cave is a RANDOM DUNGEON. If an Adversary hazard is rolled, there's a 3-in chance that it is WYVERNS.
