Bugbear Holler

Hex 38.18. A quaint, backwater village of bugbears that mostly keep to themselves, and for folks looking to unwind from the dog-eat-dog, big city life of Fleabag County. The area is famous for its holler stout, brewed in hidden stills throughout the forest and mountains in order to keep the age-old recipes secret.

Some might think there are no worries at all in Bugbear Holler, though that's not for lack of troubles. It's all in the mindset, and these bugbears know how to stay laid back and laugh in the face of danger.

MAM PROUDFLOWER

The leader of Bugbear Holler, an old, round woman, usually with a banjo slung over her big blue dress. Mam welcomes outsiders with a narrow eye, but is friendly enough so long as they don't cause trouble.

• Traits: Motherly, sarcastic, laughs after saying something harsh.
• Motivation: Keep the hullabaloo of the big cities out of Bugbear Holler.

KOTHBERT BENDYBRANCH

A prizewinning Holler Stout brewer and grub farmer that lives in Bendybranch cave just south of the village proper. Kothbert has got the best stout in the Quagmash, but there's always some out-of-towner trying to steal the recipe.

• Traits: Neighborly, extremely handy, paranoid "they" want his recipe.
• Motivation: Keep the family recipe secret forever.

THE RECIPE

Kothbert Bendybranch is looking to hire what you'd call a "detective" to catch the thief that broke into his cave and stole his secret Holler Stout recipe. Find it and he'll give you a barrel of Stout (Gourmet Ration).

• The thief left small webbed footprints, which lead through the village square and then split into three directions: the river, the farm, and Welldark Cave.
• At the riverbank is one-third of the recipe, stuck in the mud. Ducks quack and gulp minnows in the river.
• At the farm, there are a bunch of ducks eating feed and a farmer named Bud reading a scrap of paper, another third: “Two cups mystery mull?” The farmer shoos some ducks into an enclosure, complaining they always get out.
• Welldark Cave leads to an ETTIN with a basket filled with ducks. The ettin is making a soup and about to boil the first duck, which has a third of the recipe in its bill. The ettin won't readily part with the ducks or the recipe, since he found them fair and square.
• Holler Stout: Sprouts hair on your chest and replenishes 2 Quest Points (-1 Nimbleness for 1 day).

3. A bugbear kid plucks at a banjo probably looking to provoke a banjo duel.
4. A birthday party goes awry when a bugbear baby devours the older brother's cake.
5. An old holler dweller chews a piece of grass and whittles a stick into the shape of a menacing ogre.
6. A bugbear and a wug provide some much needed dental work to an old, worn out GATOR with a toothache.

• A thief has stolen the secret Kothbert Bendybranch holler stout recipe.
• An evil GIANT dwelling at The Spill is planning an attack on Bugbear Holler after the town banded together and chased him out of the mountains.

HOLLERDAY GUMBO

Everyone knows CRAWLBADS make the best gumbo, and there's a big honkin' one called Clingclaw in the bayou that could feed the whole Holler for the hollerdays. Trouble is, Gurn the Hunter got gored by a THUNDERHORN. Don't worry, he'll be fine, but Mam Proudflower needs someone to hunt ol' Clingclaw. He's lived a good long life and caused enough trouble. Time to feed the tribe!

• The CRAWLBAD (L7-C) Clingclaw is a wily critter. Once every Combat, Clingclaw can disappear into its surroundings avoiding all subsequent attacks. When it reveals itself in the following round, it attacks first in the round with Advantage.

• Gumbo Connoisseur•. Learn the secret Hollerday Gumbo recipe. Ingredients: CRAWLBAD CLAW + BOGFLOWER, stewed low for 12 hours. Effect: Heal 1d12 Courage and feeds +5 people.
