  • Entry into the Fairgrounds costs Silver •. Spending a day of fun there heals Courage.
  • Fairgrounds food—like orch rinds, mung jelly slurups, and kitten candy. Copper •. Replenish 1 Quest Point.

MARIAN GEEF

Operator and master of ceremonies, Marian Geef is a cheery lady who loves nothing more than seeing the smiling faces of her patrons. If she has one flaw, it's that she perhaps cares too much and is too friendly, giving all of herself to make folks happy.

  • Traits: Boisterous, way too friendly, lonely inside.
  • Motivation: Make every single person smile who walks inside the fairgrounds without fail for a whole summer.

BULGER HAMHAWK

The most famous competitive pie-eater in the history of the Mucklands, Hamhawk is a beast at the table, winning 20 consecutive times. The bugbear barely speaks to his competitors, merely grunting, smirking, and licking his chops.

  • Traits: Cocky, presumptuous, always eating.
  • Motivation: Defend his title and humiliate his opponents.
sights and sounds

1. A NABBER RAT snatches a pretzel from a mushrum fair goer who pumps their fist in annoyance.
2. A pair of boggart kids circles around you laughing with sparklers in their hands.
3. A town GUARD hands flowers to their sweetheart and blushes when they get a kiss on the cheek.
4. A wily, welkin carnival barker guesses people's heights, tossing "winners" rock candy when he's wrong.
5. A SPITHRA, holding half a dozen candy apples, sells them to a growing crowd of smiling faces.
6. A carnival barker waves off would-be riders of the Minecart Railway proclaiming: "Out of order, sorry!"

TALOS THE LANCER

A Felmog Outrider with a penchant for carousing, and the favorite to win the jousting tournament. Though his frame is rather slim, his armor, shield, and lance are impeccably crafted, giving him every advantage in a joust.

  • Traits: Vain, foolhardy, incessant boaster.
  • Motivation: Have his deeds inscribed in the books of Tanwaith the Scholar.
quests

PIE EATING CHAMPION

Join the Fleabag County Pie-Eating Contest and see if you can scarf down the best pies in the realm! But you've got to keep them down. Upchucking is a sure disqualification! Oh and you'll have to do it fast because Bulger Hamhawk, 20-time consecutive champion, is the fastest eater in the Mucklands.

  • The first contestant to roll a 12+ Vitality Check with Disadvantage wins the day! Rolling a 1 (even if bonuses increase the result) ends in projectile vomit and disqualification.
  • Bulger Hamhawk has Vitality and once per contest can ignore a rolled 1.
  • HEROIC TITLE ACHIEVEMENT: Win the pie eating contest.
  • Pie-Eating Champion•. Peasants and commoners respect the PC and slap them on the back approvingly.

MINECART RUNAWAY

An amusement ride called the Minecart Railway has gone haywire, running nonstop in circles around the track. Workers panic, yelling for help. Someone has to stop it before a bystander gets hurt or worse!

  • There are three carts: one is on fire, the second has a screaming passenger, the third is empty.
  • The passenger is Jane Percy, a freelance writer for Dungeoneer Magazine. Saving her from peril results in a glowing article about the PCs' heroics. When visiting Dungeoneer Magazine Inc. (p91), the PCs are welcomed warmly.

CARNIVAL GAMES

For Copper •, play a game. PC must make the appropriate Check: On a 12+, win a prize (make a Treasure Hunting Check for an Old Hoard).

  • High Striker: Might Check
  • Archery: Nimbleness Check
  • Rope Ladder Climb: Athletics Check
  • Bingo: Search Check

THE JOUSTING TOURNAMENT

Marian Geef needs a jouster, now that one of them is out with a back injury and can't compete in the tournament. Will one of you fill the empty spot? The tournament starts in 15 minutes! Oh, and bring your own mount.

  • The tournament consists of two single elimination rounds that lead to the championship round. In Round 1, the opponent has Might, and in Round 2 the opponent has Might. If the PC makes it to Round 3, they face Talos the Lancer, a FELMOG KNIGHT with Might.
  • Each round, the jousters charge each other, which repeats until one is Dehorsed. On each charge, the jousters secretly pick a maneuver that will modify their joust: Aggressive, Steady, or Defensive. Then reveal the maneuvers at the same time.
  • Aggressive vs. Steady: Steady jouster suffers on their next Might Check.
  • Steady vs. Defensive: Defensive jouster suffers to their next Might Check.
  • Defensive vs. Aggressive: Aggressive jouster suffers to their next Might Check.
  • Same Maneuver vs. Same Maneuver: No modifier.
  • After revealing maneuvers, both jousters make a Might Check:
  • 1-2. Dehorsed!
  • 3-5. Unsteady (Jouster can't pick Steady next round. 2 Unsteadies equals Dehorsed!)
  • 6-8. Rattled ( to the next Might Check)
  • 9-11. Unfazed
  • 12+. Emboldened (Remove an Unsteady)
  • If both jousters are Dehorsed simultaneously, they duel for one round. Whoever inflicts more Dread wins. On a tie, repeat.
  • HEROIC TITLE ACHIEVEMENT: Win the jousting tourney.
  • Champion of the Joust•. Gain Attack against mounted Adversaries. Once every Combat, on a 9+ Hit, knock an enemy off of their mount.
