Running the Crawl Phase

His Majesty the Worm · p.178

Open source p.178

The standard flow of the Crawl is as follows:

The players declare where they intend to go. If the guild begins this phase by leaving the City, they declare which entrance to the Underworld they will use. If the guild is in the Underworld, they declare the direction they move (e.g., “We’ll go towards room 12 to the east.”)

  • The GM draws a card from the major arcana for the Meatgrinder (p. 91).
  • The GM asks, “What light do you have?

Based on what the players can see, the GM describes the room’s contents in addition to the Meatgrinder results. The GM asks, “What do you do?”

  • The players ask the GM questions about the environment.
  • The players describe their actions.
  • To help adjudicate, the GM asks, “What do you have in your hands?”

The GM arbitrates the results of the players’ actions. The GM calls for tests of fate when the situation is tense and failure is interesting. This entire process repeats.
